Frequently Asked Questions

Isn't this tracking a bit Big Brother?
Ship tracking is not new. A pair of binoculars have a comparable range to AIS and allow an observer to identify and track a ship out the to horizon. AIS is a public broadcast of data. It isn't directed at any particular receiver and can be picked up by anyone with VHF radio or commercial receiver. There are a number of government, commercial and amateur AIS networks tracking ships around the county, however, if you are concerned about your ship position appearing on ShipAIS, contact me. Please provide some evidence that you are responsible for your vessel and I can remove your data from the website, but the AIS data will still be logged in my non-public logs.
