Incorrect or blank information broadcast by ship.

Errors in transmission.

Since there is no checksum in the AIS data a computer cannot identify corrupted data. If this is in the “dynamic” information then a spurious ship may appear. If it's in the static information then it may get assigned to the wrong ship – hence ships with wrong dimensions.
