Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't my yacht show up when there are nearby ships that do?

Yatchs, RIBs and other small craft usually have Class-B AIS transmitters fitted. These are cheaper and easier to fit than Class-A, but they have a weaker signal (12.5 watts for Class-A, 2 watts for Class-B), the antenna is usually lower and they broadcast less frequently. All these factors mean that when the reception is poor or when hills, docks and building block the signal then Class-B ships may not show up as well as Class-A.
